Although unconfirmed, there are claims that China has declared a state of emergency. HMPV, known for its flu-like symptoms resembling Covid-19, is under close observation as its spread continues.

A post on X by “SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19)” highlighted the surge in various viruses, stating that hospitals, particularly pediatric ones, are struggling to manage rising cases of pneumonia and “white lung” conditions.

According to Reuters, China’s disease control authority has launched a pilot monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin to enhance its preparedness compared to the early days of the Covid-19 outbreak. State broadcaster CCTV reported efforts to establish laboratory reporting systems and case verification protocols for handling new pathogens.

Between December 16 and 22, acute respiratory disease cases rose, with officials predicting a further increase in infections during the winter and spring seasons. Kan Biao, a senior health official, mentioned that overall cases are expected to be fewer than the previous year but did not elaborate further.

Pathogens recently identified include rhinovirus and HMPV, with infection rates rising, particularly among children under 14 in northern regions.

A respiratory expert in Shanghai cautioned against the overuse of antiviral drugs to combat HMPV, emphasizing proper management of the virus, which currently has no vaccine and typically presents with cold-like symptoms.
