Secretary Rubio's Calls with Shehbaz Sharif and Jaishankar Urge India and Pakistan to Unite for Peace in South Asia

In a series of high-level calls, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged with both Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging cooperation and de-escalation following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025.

During his conversation with Minister Jaishankar, Secretary Rubio expressed deep sorrow for the lives lost and reiterated the U.S. commitment to supporting India in its fight against terrorism.

He also encouraged India to work with Pakistan to reduce tensions and ensure peace and security in South Asia.

Later, Rubio spoke with Prime Minister Sharif, condemning the terrorist attack and emphasizing the need for Pakistan’s cooperation in investigating the incident.

Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to holding terrorists accountable and maintaining stability in the region. Secretary Rubio urged both nations to re-establish direct communication to de-escalate tensions and promote regional peace.
