“Sorry” Note Found with a New-Born Girl Dumped in a Basket in Mumbai

In a heartbreaking incident, a three-day-old baby girl was found abandoned in a basket near an orphanage in Panvel, Navi Mumbai. The infant’s parents left a handwritten note alongside her, expressing deep regret and stating that their dire financial condition made it impossible for them to raise the child, police reported on Sunday.

According to officials from the Navi Mumbai Police Crime Branch, the newborn was discovered by locals who immediately informed the authorities. The note found with the baby read, “We’re sorry. We love her, but we can’t afford to give her a good life.”

Acting swiftly, police launched an investigation and, using CCTV footage and other intelligence, traced the infant’s father, identified as Aman Iqbal Kondkar, a resident of Bhiwandi in Thane. He was detained within 24 hours of the discovery.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the baby was born to an unwed couple. Due to social and financial pressures, the parents decided to leave the child near an orphanage in the hopes that she would receive proper care and support.

“The parents were under immense emotional and financial stress. The decision to abandon the child was heartbreaking for them, but they believed it was in her best interest,” a police official stated.

The baby has since been taken into safe custody and is being cared for at a local child welfare center. Further legal proceedings are underway, and authorities are consulting child welfare services to determine the next steps for the infant’s care and future.

Police are also evaluating whether legal action will be taken against the parents under child abandonment laws.
