Trump Claims 'Many in Canada Love Being 51st State' Following PM Trudeau's Resignation Announcement

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party, citing internal challenges and external pressures, including tariff threats and remarks from US President-elect Donald Trump labeling Canada as the “51st state.”

This marks the conclusion of Trudeau’s nine-year leadership, as his Liberal Party struggles to compete with the Conservative Party in polls. Trudeau, 53, will continue as prime minister until a new party leader is chosen through a national, competitive process.

Speaking from Rideau Cottage on Monday, Trudeau stated, “I will step down as party leader and prime minister once the party selects a new leader. Canada deserves a real choice in the next election, and internal conflicts hinder my ability to lead effectively.”

The announcement follows growing tension within the Liberal Party and Trump’s proposed 25% blanket tariff on Canadian imports. On Monday, Trump took another swipe on Truth Social, claiming, “Many in Canada LOVE being the 51st State.”
