At least 27 people have tragically lost their lives after a Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a college and school campus in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The crash, which occurred on Monday, has left 88 others, including children, receiving treatment for burn injuries in local hospitals.
The accident took place at 1:06 p.m. local time (0706 GMT) when an F-7 BGI aircraft, which had just taken off from the Kurmitola air base, experienced a mechanical failure. The military confirmed that the jet was on a routine training mission when the incident occurred. The pilot of the aircraft was also among the casualties, the military reported.
Sayedur Rahman, the special assistant to the chief adviser on health, confirmed that 27 people had died, while 88 others, many with severe burn injuries, were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Many of the injured were civilians, including children who were in the vicinity of the crash site when the plane came down.
In response to the devastating event, the Bangladesh government declared a day of mourning. Flags were flown at half-mast, and special prayers were held in places of worship across the country. This tragic incident has left the nation in shock, and authorities have promised a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
The F-7 BGI aircraft, which was involved in the crash, is the most advanced variant of Chinaโs Chengdu J-7/F-7 aircraft family. Bangladesh had signed a contract for 16 such aircraft in 2011, with all deliveries completed by 2013.
This tragic event comes just weeks after another aviation disaster in neighboring India, where an Air India plane crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad, resulting in the deaths of 241 passengers and crew members, as well as 19 individuals on the ground.
Bangladesh has vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of its citizens.
