40 Relatives Shave Their Heads in Protest Against Inter-Caste Marriage in India

India

In a shocking case of caste-based discrimination, around 40 male members of a tribal girl’s family in Odisha’s Raigad district publicly shaved their heads as part of a ‘purification ritual’ after she married a man from a Scheduled Caste. The disturbing event highlights the deep-rooted casteism still prevalent in parts of rural India.

The girl, from a Scheduled Tribe, tied the knot with a Scheduled Caste youth despite opposition from her family and community. Following the wedding, the family faced a social boycott, with villagers branding them “impure” for violating caste boundaries.

Authorities have acknowledged the incident and confirmed an ongoing investigation. Human rights activists are calling it a direct violation of constitutional rights and a grim reminder of the caste system’s continued grip on Indian society.
