5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bagram, Killing Eight

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Friday evening, causing significant damage in Bagram district, about 60 kilometers from Kabul.

The quake occurred at a depth of 181 kilometers. Despite the depth, fragile rural homes in Bagram suffered severe damage. Eight people died, including an entire family of six, whose house collapsed in the Ghusfandara area.

Provincial spokesperson Hafiz Basharat said the 5.8 magnitude quakeโ€™s impact was worsened by mud-brick houses and weak infrastructure. โ€œDeep earthquakes usually cause minor damage, but our rural homes are highly vulnerable,โ€ he explained.

Residents across Afghanistan reported feeling tremors. The shaking extended to Pakistan, including Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northern Gilgit-Baltistan. Parts of Indian-administered Kashmir also felt the earthquake.

Local authorities are assessing the damage and coordinating rescue efforts. Emergency teams reached affected areas to assist survivors and provide aid to families who lost their homes.

The Taliban government urged people to remain calm and stay away from damaged buildings. Officials warned of possible aftershocks and emphasized precautions to prevent further casualties.

Seismologists noted that while a 5.8 magnitude earthquake is considered moderate, its effects can be deadly in regions with poorly constructed housing. They advised the government to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve infrastructure resilience.

Communities in affected areas have begun clearing debris, and humanitarian groups are providing food, water, and medical support to displaced families. Roads and communication networks are being inspected to ensure connectivity for relief operations.

The earthquake serves as a reminder of the seismic vulnerability of Afghanistan and neighboring regions. Experts urge authorities to implement long-term safety measures to minimize casualties from future quakes.
