Paleontologists in Peru have unveiled the fossilized skeleton of a dolphin-like creature estimated to be 8 to 12 million years old. The rare discovery was made in July in the Ocucaje Desert, located south of Lima. Scientists say the area was once part of the Pacific Ocean.
According to paleontologist Mario Urbina, the site served as a “great hotel” for marine animals millions of years ago. He explained that the coastal mountains acted as a barrier from strong ocean currents, creating calm waters where animals could thrive and reproduce. The region remained a sea for around 45 million years.
Researchers from Peru’s state Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMET) said the fossil provides new insights into the country’s ancient geography. They believe it will help experts understand how the coastline evolved over millions of years.
The deserts of Peru are considered some of the richest fossil sites in the world. Earlier this year, paleontologists discovered the fossilized remains of a great white shark relative dating back nine million years. These findings reinforce the region’s reputation as a natural museum of prehistoric marine life.
Prehistoric remains are not limited to Peru’s coastal deserts. In April 2024, scientists presented the fossilized skull of the largest known river dolphin. That creature lived in what is now the Amazon about 16 million years ago, showing how diverse marine and river life once was across the region.
Experts say discoveries like this highlight Peru’s importance in global paleontology. Each new fossil helps reconstruct ancient ecosystems, offering a clearer picture of Earth’s evolutionary history. For scientists and researchers, the Ocucaje Desert and other fossil-rich areas of Peru remain key sites for future exploration.
