Air India pilot has reportedly tested positive for cannabis following a serious mid-air incident. The flight was travelling from Phuket to New Delhi.
According to Indian media reports, the incident occurred on August 4. Flight AI-2379 was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members.
During the journey, the aircraft suddenly lost around 300 feet of altitude. The unexpected drop reportedly caused injuries to several people onboard.
At least 20 passengers were injured during the incident. Four crew members also reportedly suffered injuries.
Captain Reportedly Away From Seat
Sources claimed the captain was not seated when the aircraft suddenly lost altitude. The first officer was reportedly controlling the aircraft at that time.
The Air India flight later landed in New Delhi. The captain underwent screening after the aircraft arrived at its destination.
The initial screening reportedly detected an intoxicating substance in the captain’s system. Authorities then conducted another drug test for further confirmation.
According to reports, the result of the second test became available on Tuesday. The test also reportedly returned a positive result.
Sources cited by Indian media said the second test confirmed cannabis use by the captain.
Flight Carried 145 People
The aircraft had 145 people onboard, including passengers and crew members. The incident resulted in reported injuries to 24 people.
The sudden altitude loss has raised questions about what happened inside the cockpit. Reports said the first officer had control when the aircraft dropped.
