Airspace Ban Hits Air India With Heavy Daily Losses

Air India is facing mounting financial pressure as Pakistan’s continued airspace ban has pushed the airline’s losses past INR 8.2 billion. The restriction, which has stretched over 40 days, is forcing aircraft to take longer routes, significantly driving up fuel and operational costs.

Sources reveal that Air India is incurring a staggering loss of INR 200 million each day. The prolonged rerouting not only affects scheduling but is also taking a toll on overall airline efficiency. The impact is particularly severe for long-haul international routes that previously depended on the shorter Pakistan corridor.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has reached out to the Indian government, outlining the dire implications of the ongoing situation. In a formal communication, Wilson warned that sustaining operations under these conditions could become untenable if the ban is not lifted soon.

The crisis is not limited to Air India alone. Other Indian carriers are also reportedly facing multi-billion-rupee losses due to the restriction, amplifying concerns within the aviation sector and prompting calls for diplomatic intervention.
