Arwan Hanin Makes History as Oxford Union’s First Palestinian President

Arwa Hanin Elrayess, widely known as Arwan Hanin, has been elected president of the Oxford Union for the Trinity term of 2026. Her term will run from April to June, marking a historic moment for the university’s prestigious debating society.

Arwan Hanin secured 757 votes, winning by a margin of 155 votes over her closest competitor, Liza Barkova. Her victory makes her the first Arab woman, as well as the first Palestinian and Algerian, to hold this influential position. The achievement was celebrated by her father, Mohamed Elrayess, on LinkedIn, highlighting the significance of this milestone.

The Oxford Union is one of the world’s most respected student-led debating societies, hosting high-profile discussions on global politics and international affairs. In recent months, the Union has been in the spotlight due to internal controversies, including speaker withdrawals and governance disputes.

During her campaign, Arwan Hanin emphasized the need to separate Union politics from its debates. She stated that internal conflicts had “overshadowed the very debates that define the Union.” Barkova, her opponent, also highlighted the importance of restoring credibility and ensuring consistent participation from invited speakers.

Speaking to Cherwell, Arwan Hanin expressed her vision for the Union, saying, “The Union is an incredibly special place facing very difficult times. We need a fresh start with more transparent governance, financial responsibility, and to reaffirm our standing as the last bastion of free speech.”

Beyond the Union, Arwan Hanin has contributed to the documentary Heart of a Protest, which examines pro-Palestine demonstrations in the UK, showcasing her engagement with social and political issues.

The Oxford Union has experienced turbulent leadership in recent years, with former presidents George Abaraonye and Moosa Harraj facing no-confidence votes. Despite challenges, Arwan Hanin’s election signals a new chapter of leadership, promising reform, transparency, and a renewed focus on the Union’s legacy of free speech.
