A recent US-Israeli strike near Iranโs Bushehr Nuclear Plant has raised serious safety concerns. The attack killed one security personnel and damaged an auxiliary building. Officials say the main reactor at the Bushehr Nuclear Plant was not harmed.
The incident took place on Saturday. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the guard died after being hit by projectile fragments. Iranian authorities reported no rise in radiation levels after the strike. However, the situation has increased fears of a possible nuclear risk.
Iranโs Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, strongly condemned the attack. He warned that targeting sensitive sites like the Bushehr Nuclear Plant could lead to dangerous consequences. He said even a small mistake could expose the region to radioactive contamination.
Araghchi also stated that the facility has been targeted multiple times since tensions rose on February 28. He criticized the global community for failing to protect nuclear infrastructure during conflict. Iran has also contacted the United Nations to raise the issue.
The IAEA expressed deep concern about the strike. Director General Rafael Grossi stressed that nuclear facilities must never be military targets. He added that even smaller buildings near reactors can play a key role in safety systems. Damage to such areas can increase the risk of accidents.
The attack also led to emergency actions at the site. Russiaโs nuclear agency, Rosatom, evacuated about 200 workers from the plant. Buses carrying the staff left shortly after the strike. This was described as the largest evacuation since the conflict began.
The Bushehr Nuclear Plant is located on Iranโs southern coast. It is the countryโs only operational nuclear power facility. The plant began producing electricity in 2011 and uses Russian technology. It supplies a small but important part of Iranโs energy needs.
Experts warn that any strike near nuclear sites can be risky. Even if reactors are not hit, nearby damage can still cause serious problems. The latest attack has added to growing tensions in the region and increased global concern about nuclear safety.
