The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has sharply criticized Elon Musk for his recent comments labeling U.S. Muslim aid organizations as “terrorist organizations.” Musk’s remarks, made in a retweet, have sparked outrage for promoting Islamophobia and endangering the safety of Muslim Americans.
In his retweet, Musk endorsed a post that accused multiple U.S. Muslim nonprofit groups, including the Arab American Institute, Islamic Relief Agency, Muslim Aid, and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, of having ties to terrorism. Musk commented, “As many people have said, why pay terrorist organisations and certain countries to hate us when they’re perfectly willing to do it for free?”

In response, CAIR, a leading civil rights organization representing American Muslims, condemned Musk’s statement, asserting that the groups he referred to are legitimate, registered nonprofits that have partnered with various U.S. administrations, including the Trump administration. “These organizations contribute significantly to society, especially in humanitarian work, and should not be disparaged based on baseless accusations,” CAIR stated.
“Reckless and Dangerous” Remarks
Nihad Awad, CAIR’s National Executive Director, responded directly to Musk, calling his remarks “reckless and dangerous.” Awad stressed that such rhetoric fuels Islamophobia and threatens the safety of innocent people. “This kind of rhetoric undermines the values of justice and equality. Do better,” he urged.
CAIR also urged Musk to focus on more pressing issues, such as the use of U.S. taxpayer money for military operations by Israel, particularly in Gaza, where thousands of innocent lives have been lost.
The controversy has further polarized debates surrounding U.S. foreign aid and the treatment of Muslim organizations. While some supporters of Musk advocate for heightened scrutiny of these organizations, civil rights groups, including CAIR, emphasize that the accusations are unfounded and harmful.
As tensions continue to rise, the discourse around these issues is likely to intensify, with both sides holding firmly to their perspectives. For now, CAIR’s call for responsible rhetoric and accountability stands at the forefront of the conversation.
