China Removes 19 Senior Officials Over Corruption Before Major Political Meeting

China has stepped up its campaign against corruption by removing several senior officials from important government roles. The move comes just days before a major national political gathering in Beijing.

According to media reports, Chinese authorities removed 19 senior officials from the list of national lawmakers. The group includes both government representatives and military officers.

The decision was taken ahead of China’s annual political meetings scheduled for next week. Thousands of delegates are expected to attend the sessions in Beijing.

The meetings will run from March 4 to March 11. During this period, leaders will discuss national policies and set economic targets for the coming year.

Officials say the removal of lawmakers is linked to ongoing investigations into corruption and disciplinary violations. China’s top legislative body confirmed that nine of the dismissed individuals were military officers.

The latest action highlights President Xi Jinping’s continued focus on fighting corruption within the country’s political and military systems.

Since taking power, Xi has made anti-corruption efforts a central part of his leadership. He has repeatedly described corruption as one of the biggest threats to the ruling Communist Party.

To address the issue, the government launched a broad campaign targeting both high-level leaders and lower-ranking officials. The strategy is widely known as the “Tigers and Flies” campaign.

The campaign aims to remove corruption at all levels of the political system. It targets powerful leaders known as “tigers” and smaller officials referred to as “flies.”

In a recent development, President Xi also removed senior military general Zhang Youxia from his position. Authorities said the decision followed serious disciplinary and legal violations.

Earlier, in October 2025, Chinese authorities dismissed nine high-ranking generals as part of similar anti-corruption efforts in the military.

Observers say these actions show the government’s determination to maintain discipline within state institutions. The leadership believes strict measures are necessary to protect political stability.

However, the anti-corruption campaign has also attracted criticism from some analysts. Critics argue that the crackdown may sometimes be used to remove political rivals.

Despite these debates, Chinese authorities continue to present the campaign as essential for national governance.
