Congress Protests Against Vijay Shah’s Controversial Comments on Muslim Army Officer

Congress supporters launched widespread protests in cities like Indore, Bhopal, Badnawar, and Khandwa in response to BJP minister Vijay Shah’s controversial comments targeting Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a senior Muslim female officer in the Indian Army.

Demonstrators smeared ink on Shah’s nameplates and burned his effigies while chanting slogans such as “Modi Muradabad” and “Vijay Shah Muradabad.”

Congress slams BJP’s ‘anti-women’ stance
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge harshly criticized Shah’s statements, describing them as proof of the BJP and RSS’s misogynistic and divisive mentality. He demanded Shah’s immediate dismissal, citing national security concerns.

Vijay Shah apologizes under pressure
Following backlash and intervention from the BJP leadership, Shah issued an apology, asserting that his comments were misunderstood and expressing respect for Colonel Qureshi. He stated, “If anyone was hurt, I’m ready to apologise repeatedly.” However, public anger persisted.

Court intervenes, orders FIR
The Madhya Pradesh High Court instructed authorities to file an FIR against Shah within four hours, ruling that his remarks not only insulted Colonel Qureshi but also disrespected the Indian Army and threatened communal harmony.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi: A trailblazer
Serving in the Army’s Signals Corps since 1999, Colonel Qureshi gained national attention during Operation Sindoor for briefing the media and became the first Indian female officer to lead a multinational military drill in 2016.
