US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Donald Lu, is scheduled to testify before a congressional committee today (Wednesday), focusing on various aspects of Pakistan’s political landscape. With a deep understanding of Pakistan’s political dynamics, Lu intends to delve into the recent elections in the country. He recognizes the resilience of Pakistani citizens who have historically participated in elections despite facing challenges like violence and intimidation.

 

Lu is committed to addressing any irregularities that may have occurred during the electoral process, aligning with American policy objectives. He emphasizes the significance of federalism and stresses the importance of national unity achieved through stability and mutual respect among all stakeholders. Lu reiterates America’s dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that every citizen’s voice is heard.

Furthermore, the US Deputy Secretary of State hinted at forthcoming remarks regarding US policy on observed irregularities in the Pakistan elections. He also expressed concerns about unnecessary restrictions on freedom of expression, signaling America’s stance on safeguarding fundamental rights.

In a separate development, during a meeting between US Ambassador Donald Bloom and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, bilateral issues were discussed, as per US Department of State Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel.

Patel highlighted that discussions also occurred between the American ambassador and the Pakistani finance minister, along with other members of the financial team. Stressing the importance of preventing Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorists, Patel underscored the necessity for ongoing cooperation between the two nations.

Additionally, Patel acknowledged Pakistan’s robust media landscape, affirming the importance of a free press in democratic societies.
