Two men and a woman have been arrested in Essex, England, on suspicion of spying for Russia. Police confirmed the arrests were made in Grays, a town east of London.
A 41-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were detained at one address. A 46-year-old man was arrested at a separate location nearby. All three were taken to a London police station for questioning.
The arrests were made under the National Security Act. This law makes it illegal to assist foreign intelligence services. Officers also searched properties connected to the suspects as part of the investigation.
Authorities said the case involves possible links to Russian intelligence. However, they stressed it is not connected to another probe involving the Wagner Group. That case saw young British men accused of planning criminal acts, including arson.
Commander Dominic Murphy, who leads counter-terrorism policing in London, said there is growing concern about individuals being used as proxies by foreign agencies. He added that protecting the UK from espionage is now a major focus for police and security services.
All three suspects have been released on bail with strict conditions. Investigators continue to examine evidence collected from the searches. Their names have not been made public.
Officials warned that spying for a foreign state is a serious crime. It carries heavy penalties under UK law. They also noted that such cases often remain highly sensitive due to national security concerns.
This incident highlights rising fears about espionage activity in Britain. Security agencies say they are increasing efforts to stop foreign influence operations and protect national interests
