Extension of Gaza Truce: UN Chief Urges Continued Ceasefire

As the clock ticked down on the imminent expiration of the four-day truce in Gaza, a temporary humanitarian pause in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas received a two-day extension. The decision to prolong the truce was announced by mediator Qatar, signaling a continuation in efforts to quell the hostilities.

Majed al-Ansari, the spokesman for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed the extension through social media, formerly Twitter, stating, “The State of Qatar announces that, as part of the ongoing mediation, an agreement has been reached to extend the humanitarian truce for an additional two days in the Gaza Strip.”

This extension was confirmed by Hamas, affirming its commitment to the agreement.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen by the day, prompting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to advocate for a comprehensive humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Instead of temporary truces, Guterres emphasizes the pressing need for a sustained cessation of hostilities to address the dire situation in Gaza.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for Guterres, underscored this sentiment in a statement, expressing, “The dialogue that led to the agreement must continue, resulting in a full humanitarian ceasefire, for the benefit of the people of Gaza, Israel, and the wider region.”

Furthermore, emphasizing the UN’s unwavering support for these peace initiatives, Dujarric stated, “The United Nations will continue to support these efforts in every possible way.”

Guterres reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas, as emphasized by Dujarric, urging all parties to prioritize the well-being of civilians affected by the conflict.

The extension of the humanitarian pause brings a temporary respite to the ongoing tensions but underscores the urgent need for sustained efforts towards a durable ceasefire to alleviate the humanitarian crisis gripping Gaza and bring lasting peace to the region.
