Gen Z-Led Protests Erupt Across Mexico After Mayor’s Killing

Gen Z-driven protests spread across Mexico after Mayor Carlos Manzo’s killing, with thousands demanding justice, accountability, and stronger action against rising violence.

Large Gen Z-driven protests have erupted across Mexico following the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo on November 1. Thousands of young people have taken to the streets demanding justice, accountability, and stronger action against rising violence in the country.

Demonstrators marched in major cities, including Mexico City, Uruapan, Monterrey, and Guadalajara. Many protesters carried signs calling for an end to impunity and urging the government to protect public officials and citizens from organised crime. The movement, largely mobilised through social media, has gained momentum rapidly, reflecting growing frustration among younger Mexicans.

In Mexico City, tensions escalated when a group of masked protesters attempted to push through barriers around the National Palace. Police responded with tear gas, leading to clashes that left injuries on both sides. Officials confirmed that around 100 police officers were injured, with 40 requiring hospital treatment. At least 20 civilians were also hurt.

Authorities reported 20 arrests, while another 20 individuals were detained for administrative violations. Despite the violence, most protests remained peaceful as youth-led groups emphasised their stance against crime and corruption.

Although the organisers insist the movement is non-political, government officials have suggested that certain right-wing groups and coordinated online campaigns may be amplifying the unrest. Protest leaders have rejected these claims, saying the demonstrations are driven by genuine anger over insecurity.

Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was known for speaking openly against criminal networks, was shot dead earlier this month. His killing has become a symbol of the broader climate of fear and violence affecting many regions of Mexico.

Analysts say the demonstrations signal a rising wave of political engagement among Gen Z citizens, who are increasingly using digital platforms to organise protests and demand reforms. Many believe the movement could mark a significant shift in Mexico’s youth activism landscape.
