Hamas Reaffirms Ceasefire Commitment Amid Tensions With Israel

Hamas has reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire agreement with Israel, amid ongoing concerns over violations and regional tensions. The ceasefire, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, came into effect last month after weeks of negotiations.

In a recent statement, Hamas confirmed that its delegation, including exiled Gaza chief Khalil Al-Hayya, met with Egyptโ€™s intelligence chief to discuss implementing the first phase of the agreement. However, the group accused Israel of โ€œcontinued violationsโ€ that could undermine the fragile ceasefire.

The Palestinian movement called for a โ€œclear and defined mechanismโ€ supervised by mediators to monitor and address any breaches of the deal. This approach aims to prevent escalations and ensure both sides adhere to the terms.

During the meeting, Hamas also raised concerns about the situation of its fighters trapped in Rafah tunnels. The group reported that communication with these fighters had been cut off and discussed urgent solutions with Egyptian officials. Reuters had earlier reported that mediators were working to resolve the situation of Hamas fighters hidden in tunnel networks in Israeli-controlled areas of Gaza.

The ceasefire followed increased military activity, including Israeli operations against the group. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that five senior Hamas members were killed recently after a fighter entered Israeli-controlled Gaza territory to attack soldiers. These incidents highlight the fragility of the current calm and the need for strict monitoring under the ceasefire agreement.

Hamas stressed that maintaining dialogue with mediators is critical to preventing further conflict. The groupโ€™s commitment to the agreement shows its willingness to cooperate, even as tensions persist in the region.

Observers say that the success of the ceasefire will depend on both sides adhering to the terms and resolving ongoing issues, including the status of fighters in tunnels and alleged violations. The international community continues to push for a stable resolution to avoid renewed hostilities in Gaza.

The recent discussions underline the ongoing role of Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. in mediating between Israel and Hamas, aiming to maintain peace and prevent further escalation.
