Hamas Seeks Guarantees as Ceasefire Talks for Gaza Gain Momentum

Hamas is demanding clear guarantees that a new U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal will lead to a permanent end to the war in Gaza, a source close to the group said, amid escalating violence that left dozens more Palestinians dead. The push for a truce comes nearly 21 months into the war between Israel and Hamas, with renewed optimism for a breakthrough.

The ceasefire momentum has grown following the U.S.-brokered end to a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran. However, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continue, with at least 59 people reported killed on Thursday, according to local health authorities. Despite ongoing attacks, Israeli officials expressed hope that a ceasefire and hostage deal is within reach.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Israel had accepted a proposed 60-day ceasefire, during which both sides would work toward ending the war. Hamas, however, insists on firm international guarantees that this temporary truce will ultimately result in a lasting peace.

Hamas confirmed that it is consulting with other Palestinian factions and will respond to mediators once internal discussions conclude. Egyptian and Qatari mediators are seeking U.S. and international assurances to secure Hamas’ participation, according to Egyptian security sources.

The current proposal involves a phased deal: 10 living Israeli hostages would be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, along with the return of 18 deceased hostages. Humanitarian aid would enter Gaza immediately, and Israeli forces would begin a partial withdrawal. Talks for a permanent ceasefire would commence during the truce period.
