Brazil Supreme Court Jails Bolsonaro for 27 Years in Coup Plot

Brasília, Brazil  Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison. He was found guilty of plotting a military coup after losing the 2022 election. 

The court convicted Bolsonaro on five charges. These include leading a criminal organization, attempting to violently abolish democratic rule, and planning a coup. Four of the five justices on the panel voted guilty. One judge dissented.
The court also found corruption, damage to state property, and harm to protected public institutions.

Bolsonaro is now under house arrest. He remains barred from holding public office until at least 2030. He denies all wrongdoing and has pledged to appeal.
