Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau has erupted, causing disruption to flights and educational activities in affected areas.
The Volcano sent lava and large amounts of ash high into the atmosphere. Ash clouds reportedly reached around 20,000 feet toward Java.
They were also reported above 50,000 feet toward Sumatra and Banten.
The eruption affected air travel around Jakarta and created difficult conditions in communities exposed to volcanic ash.
More Than 200 Flights Affected
Operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport were temporarily disrupted following the eruption. According to Indonesia’s airport operator, 209 scheduled flights were cancelled.
These included 160 domestic flights, 39 international services, and 10 cargo flights.
Around 22,800 passengers were reportedly affected by the disruption. Several major international routes also faced cancellations or schedule changes.
Affected connections included Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Sydney, Seoul, Doha, and Amsterdam.
Airlines including Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and AirAsia reported disruptions to some services. Passengers were advised to monitor airline updates as conditions developed.
Schools Suspend Educational Activities
Volcanic ash also affected communities near the eruption zone. Several schools suspended educational activities due to ash spreading across populated areas.
Some residents reported eye irritation and respiratory problems after exposure to volcanic material. Indonesia’s disaster management agency, BNPB, issued safety guidance for affected communities.
Residents were advised to remain calm and follow instructions from authorities.
People were encouraged to wear masks and protect their eyes from volcanic ash. Authorities also advised residents to reduce unnecessary outdoor activities.
Water supplies should be covered to prevent contamination from falling ash. Drivers were also asked to exercise additional caution in affected areas.
No Tsunami Threat Reported
Authorities said there was currently no tsunami threat linked to the eruption.
The Volcano reportedly produced powerful lava fountains during the latest activity. The sound of the eruption was reportedly heard hundreds of kilometres away.
Two additional eruption sounds were also reported on September 6. Authorities continue to monitor volcanic activity and its possible impact on nearby communities.
Anak Krakatau Has Long History of Activity
Anak Krakatau is located in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait.
It emerged following the catastrophic 1883 eruption of Krakatoa. The Volcano has remained active for decades and has experienced several significant eruptions.
One of its most destructive recent events occurred in December 2018. Part of Anak Krakatau collapsed into the sea following major volcanic activity.
The collapse triggered a tsunami that struck coastal communities in Java and Sumatra.
More than 400 people were killed in that disaster. The latest eruption has again highlighted the risks surrounding Indonesia’s active volcanic region.
