Iran’s capture of a US underwater drone has triggered debate over its military value and political impact.
The drone is a Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle developed by Anduril. It is designed for long-range surveillance and other underwater missions.
The vessel belongs to a newer generation of military drones. These systems can operate for several days with limited human involvement.
The US military and Anduril have downplayed the significance of the incident. US officials described the captured vehicle as an older model.
US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins said the drone was defective. He said it did not collect sensitive information.
Hawkins also said the vehicle carried no classified sonar or radar equipment. The drone was reportedly left “dead in the water” after suffering a malfunction.
Iran Mocks US Drone Loss
Iranian diplomatic missions have used the incident to mock Washington. Iran’s embassy in Ghana posted a sarcastic message on X.
The embassy claimed Iranian forces recovered the submersible intact. It also described the recovery in a mocking tone.
Iran’s embassy in Hyderabad also joined the criticism. It joked about holding a reverse-engineering ceremony for the captured vehicle.
The comments reflect Tehran’s effort to present the incident as a propaganda success. Analysts believe the episode could help Iran promote its military capabilities.
Farzin Nadimi, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute, discussed the possible impact. He said Iran could use the incident to improve its own designs.
Could Iran Reverse-Engineer the Drone?
Experts believe Iran will likely examine the captured US underwater drone closely. Engineers could study its mechanical components and construction.
Bryan Clark of the Hudson Institute said Iran could reverse-engineer mechanical systems. However, he noted that the drone’s software includes built-in protections.
Iran has previously studied captured American military technology. The country has also claimed success in reproducing foreign drone designs.
In 2011, Iran captured a US RQ-170 Sentinel stealth reconnaissance aircraft. Then-President Barack Obama publicly asked Tehran to return it.
Iran later claimed it had reverse-engineered the aircraft. It subsequently displayed domestically produced drones that appeared influenced by its design.
Earlier US Response to Drone Capture
The latest incident differs from Washington’s response to a maritime drone incident in 2022.
At that time, an Iranian naval vessel attempted to tow away a US Navy Saildrone. A US patrol ship and MH-60S Seahawk helicopter were deployed.
The response showed the importance Washington places on preventing Iran from obtaining advanced maritime technology.
Analysts say the captured US underwater drone is unlikely to give Iran a major military advantage. However, the incident remains embarrassing for Washington.
The episode also creates a messaging challenge for Anduril and the US Navy.
Anduril has described the Dive-LD as a highly reliable autonomous underwater vehicle. The company says it can operate for up to 10 days.
The Dive-LD also served as a testbed for Australia’s Ghost Shark underwater drone program.
Experts say Iran may use the incident to strengthen its narrative around the Strait of Hormuz. The episode could therefore carry greater political value than its direct military impact.
