Iran has suspended operations at several power plants due to fuel shortages, worsened by a surge in demand during a cold weather spell. Despite holding vast reserves of natural gas, the country has faced power rationing, and authorities have been forced to close schools and government offices in over 20 provinces, including Tehran.

President Masoud Pezeshkian apologized for the shortages and promised a resolution by next year. The western Lorestan province partially shut a gas-powered plant on Monday, following similar measures in the northern Golestan province. Other regions, including Isfahan and West Azerbaijan, also closed schools and government buildings due to the freezing temperatures.
Power cuts have affected many areas, including Tehran, but local media reported that these measures saved significant amounts of gas and electricity in just 24 hours.
