Tehran has warned neighboring countries that it could strike US bases if Washington takes military action, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Wednesday. The announcement comes amid growing unrest in Iran and threats from former President Donald Trump to intervene in support of protesters.
According to three diplomats, some personnel at the US military’s Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar were advised to leave temporarily. However, there were no signs of a large-scale evacuation like last year, when Iran targeted bases with missiles in response to US airstrikes.
The unrest in Iran has led to the deaths of more than 2,600 people, according to rights groups, during one of the largest waves of protests against clerical rule. Trump has repeatedly threatened “strong action” to support protesters, though the scope and timing of any US intervention remain unclear.
A senior Iranian official said Tehran contacted regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Turkey, urging them to prevent Washington from attacking Iran. The official added that US bases in these countries could be targeted if the US strikes Iran.
Iranian authorities have accused the US and Israel of fomenting unrest, calling protesters “terrorists.” Meanwhile, direct communications between Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff have been suspended.
Despite the unrest, a Western official said Iran’s government remains in control, and the crackdown has restored some calm. Iranian state TV showed large funeral processions in Tehran, Isfahan, and Bushehr, while authorities emphasized the need to defend the country’s sovereignty and security from foreign interference.
Rights groups report over 18,000 arrests so far, and Iranian authorities continue judicial actions against those involved in violent protests. The situation has drawn international attention, with France condemning the crackdown and the US urging its citizens to leave Iran immediately.

Iran’s warning underscores the heightened regional tensions and the risks of escalation if military action occurs. Analysts say the situation remains delicate, with the potential for rapid developments impacting US-Iran relations and regional stability.
