Iran Will Accept Nuclear Curbs if Sanctions Lifted

Iran has expressed willingness to accept limitations on its nuclear program, including restrictions on uranium enrichment, provided that international sanctions are lifted. This statement was made by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, in an article published in The Guardian on Sunday. Araghchi emphasized that Iran is prepared to engage in a “realistic and lasting bargain” that entails stringent oversight and curbs on enrichment in exchange for the termination of sanctions.

The offer comes amid escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear activities and the potential reimposition of UN sanctions. In late August, the E3β€”France, Germany, and the United Kingdomβ€”initiated the “snapback” mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal, aiming to reinstate sanctions due to Iran’s non-compliance with its commitments. The E3’s move has been met with criticism from Iran, which argues that the European nations are enabling U.S. policies and undermining their role as neutral mediators.

Araghchi warned that failing to seize the current opportunity for dialogue could have “destructive” consequences for the region and beyond. He called on European nations to reconsider their approach and engage in meaningful negotiations to resolve the nuclear impasse.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also been involved in discussions with Iran regarding nuclear inspections. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has expressed hope for a resolution to resume inspections, emphasizing Iran’s obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. However, Iran has suspended cooperation with the IAEA following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on its nuclear sites in June.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the complex issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the broader geopolitical implications.
