Iranian human rights activist and Noble Laureate Narges Mohammadi has been handed an additional seven and a half years in prison, her lawyer confirmed on Sunday.
According to her lawyer, a court in Mashhad convicted Mohammadi of โillegal assembly and collusion,โ for which she received six years, and โpropaganda activities,โ earning one and a half years. She was arrested in December for giving what authorities called an โincendiary speechโ at a public event. Her family reported that she was beaten during her arrest and briefly hospitalized.
This new sentence raises her total prison term to 44 years. Mohammadi, who has already spent over a decade in prison, has been serving a 13-year sentence since 2021 for alleged โpropaganda against the stateโ and โcollusion against national security,โ charges she strongly denies. She was temporarily released on medical grounds in December 2024 but now faces many more years behind bars.
Human rights groups have repeatedly called attention to the harsh sentences against the Noble Laureate, warning that her imprisonment violates international human rights standards. Mohammadiโs case has drawn global condemnation, highlighting the ongoing repression of activists in Iran.
The sentencing comes amid nationwide unrest following protests in January. Deputy Health Minister Masoud Habibi confirmed that nearly 100 students were killed during demonstrations, while 25,000 people, including security personnel, sustained injuries. Fatalities included students from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
Medical officials reported performing 13,000 surgeries on protest-related injuries, including eye, orthopedic, vascular, and general surgeries. Human rights groups have warned that official Iranian statistics likely underreport casualties, claiming nearly 7,000 deaths, in contrast to the governmentโs official figure of 3,117.
Amid these developments, the international community continues to monitor the treatment of the Noble Laureate, urging Iran to respect human rights and release political prisoners. Mohammadiโs case remains a symbol of resistance and the ongoing struggle for freedom in the country.
