The Middle East conflict has entered a new phase after reports claimed that Iranian Strikes targeted Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure in Bahrain. The reported attack marks a significant development, as digital infrastructure has increasingly become part of modern military confrontations.
According to Iranian state-affiliated media, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched cruise missiles at AWS facilities in Bahrain. The operation was reportedly carried out by the IRGC Aerospace Force during the 24th wave of Operation Nasr 2.
Iranian media stated that the Iranian Strikes were launched in response to what Tehran described as a United States attack on the Darkhovin nuclear power project under construction in Iran’s Khuzestan province. Officials in Tehran referred to the alleged US action as a violation of international law.
At the time of reporting, Bahraini authorities had not confirmed Iran’s claim that the AWS cloud region in Bahrain, known as ME-South-1, had been hit. Amazon Web Services has also not publicly confirmed any damage related to the reported missile attack.
The AWS Bahrain region was launched in 2019 and became Amazon’s first cloud region in the Middle East. It plays an important role in supporting the region’s digital economy by providing cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data storage, databases, and networking services.
Many organizations rely on the Bahrain cloud region for daily operations. These include banks, government institutions, energy companies, logistics providers, and thousands of private businesses operating across Gulf countries.
Cybersecurity and infrastructure experts say the reported Iranian Strikes highlight how modern conflicts are expanding beyond traditional military targets. Critical digital infrastructure is increasingly viewed as strategically important because it supports financial systems, communication networks, and government services.
AWS has built its cloud infrastructure using multiple Availability Zones to reduce the impact of technical failures or localized disruptions. This design allows services to continue operating even if one facility experiences problems.
However, experts warn that repeated attacks on cloud facilities located within the same geographic region could reduce this level of resilience. If multiple sites were affected simultaneously, recovery could take longer and service interruptions might become more significant.
The reported missile attack follows several earlier incidents involving AWS facilities in the Gulf. In recent months, drone activity disrupted operations in Bahrain, forcing some customers to shift workloads to other AWS regions while technical teams restored services.
Amazon also previously confirmed that one of its Bahrain facilities sustained damage from a nearby drone strike. In addition, two AWS data centers in the United Arab Emirates were reportedly hit during earlier attacks linked to regional tensions.
The latest developments come amid growing instability in the region. Iranian officials accused Washington of targeting the Darkhovin nuclear power project one day before the reported strikes. Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization condemned the alleged attack but did not provide details about the extent of damage or report any casualties.
