Ireland Pushes UEFA to Suspend Israel from Football Competitions

Irish football is set to take center stage in sports and politics this weekend as the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) prepares to vote on a historic motion: formally requesting UEFA to suspend Israel from all European competitions.

The resolution, proposed by Bohemian FC and supported by several other Irish clubs, accuses the Israel Football Association (IFA) of breaching two key UEFA statutes. First, it alleges that Israel organized clubs in occupied Palestinian territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association. Second, it claims Israel has failed to implement and enforce an effective anti-racism policy.

If passed, the motion would also call on UEFA to establish transparent criteria for suspending or excluding member associations, potentially setting a precedent for future disciplinary actions in European football.

This is not the first time Israel’s participation in international football has come under scrutiny. Last month, UEFA considered suspending Israel but backed down after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Gaza on October 10. Similarly, UN experts have called for Israel’s suspension from international sports, citing findings from a Commission of Inquiry report that accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

The Irish government, which officially recognized a Palestinian state last year, has been one of the EU’s most vocal critics of Israel’s actions. Several European football bodies, including Turkey and Norway, have publicly supported Israel’s exclusion, highlighting growing international pressure, even as FIFA has remained largely silent.

Should the motion succeed, UEFA could face one of its most controversial decisions in recent history, raising questions about the intersection of sports governance and political responsibility. The outcome could redefine how football authorities respond to international conflicts and human rights concerns.
