Israel Warns Hamas to Surrender or Face 'Annihilation'

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a stark ultimatum to Hamas on Monday, demanding the militant group lay down its arms and release all hostages. Failure to comply, Katz warned, would result in the complete destruction of Gaza and the annihilation of Hamas. This declaration follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for Hamas to accept a ceasefire deal aimed at securing the release of hostages held in Gaza.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Katz addressed Hamas militants both in Gaza and abroad, stating, “Release the hostages and put down your weapons β€” or Gaza will be destroyed and you will be annihilated.” He further described the upcoming military operations as a “massive hurricane” that would devastate Gaza City.

The Israeli military has intensified its operations, targeting high-rise buildings in Gaza City that it alleges are used by Hamas for militant activities. These actions have resulted in significant casualties, with at least 40 Palestinians reported dead on Monday, including journalist Osama Balousha. The ongoing conflict, which began with a Hamas-led attack in October 2023, has led to the deaths of over 64,000 Palestinians and left many others in dire humanitarian conditions.

Hamas, in response to Trump’s comments, has expressed a willingness to engage in immediate negotiations. The group has proposed a ceasefire in exchange for a clear declaration of the war’s end, a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian committee to manage the region.

Despite these developments, Israeli officials have rejected partial ceasefire proposals, insisting on the immediate and unconditional surrender of Hamas, the release of all hostages, and the dismantling of Hamas’s military capabilities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s military objectives remain unchanged, focusing on the complete neutralization of Hamas.

The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with growing concerns over the humanitarian impact of the conflict and the prospects for a lasting peace agreement.
