Grammy-winning jazz musician and composer Chuck Mangione has passed away at the age of 84. His family confirmed the news in a statement released on Thursday, saying he died peacefully in his sleep on July 22, 2025, at his home in Rochester, New York.
Chuck Mangione was a celebrated flugelhorn and trumpet player. He released over 30 albums and sold millions of records throughout his career. His music brought joy to listeners across the world for decades.
Mangione was born on November 29, 1940, in Rochester. He grew up in a musical family. His father introduced Chuck and his brother Gap Mangione to jazz at a young age. While most kids listened to Elvis, Chuck listened to jazz legends.
The Mangione brothers formed a jazz band in high school called the Jazz Brothers. Later, Chuck studied music at the Eastman School of Music, where he earned a degree in 1963. He returned there in 1968 to direct the school’s jazz ensemble and helped grow its jazz program until 1972.
Chuck Mangione’s solo career was highly successful. He received 13 Grammy nominations and won two Grammy Awards. He won his first in 1977 for Bellavia and another in 1979 for The Children of Sanchez. His most famous album, Feels So Good (1977), became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time.
In 1980, he performed at the Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Lake Placid. He also donated personal music items to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2009. In 2012, he was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame.
His family described him as someone full of energy and love for music. He was known for staying after concerts to sign autographs and meet fans, showing deep appreciation for their support.
A message on Chuck Mangione’s official website reads, “We are very sorry. Chuck Mangione has passed.” His legacy will live on through his timeless music and the joy he brought to fans around the world.
