The death toll from floods in Kenya has risen to 228, according to international media reports citing the country’s Ministry of Interior. Initially reported at 179 deaths, the toll has tragically increased. The floods have also impacted the Masai Mara Safari Park in western Kenya, where tourists in hotels were swept away by the overflowing Telek River.

A devastating landslide near the village of Mai Mahio in the country’s center claimed the lives of 46 individuals earlier in the day. The Ministry released a statement warning of potential landslides and mudslides in mountainous areas, anticipating a worsening situation in low-lying and coastal regions.
Months of flooding in Kenya have caused extensive destruction, including damage to houses, roads, and bridges, and displacement of over 210,000 people. The adverse weather has also affected other East African nations, with floods and landslides in neighboring Tanzania resulting in 155 fatalities. Significant damage and loss of life have also been reported in Uganda and Burundi.
