‘Killer’ Heatwave Sweeps Europe, Leaves Dozens Dead and Thousands Without Electricity

‘Killer’ Heatwave Sweeps Europe, Leaves Dozens Dead and Thousands Without Electricity

ISLAMABAD – A severe Heatwave continues to affect several European countries, bringing record temperatures, power outages, and growing health concerns. Millions of people across the continent are facing difficult conditions as extreme heat impacts daily life.

Authorities in multiple countries have issued warnings as temperatures continue to rise. Experts believe the current Heatwave is being intensified by climate change and persistent weather patterns that trap hot air over Europe. These conditions have caused temperatures to remain unusually high for several days.

France has been among the hardest-hit countries. On Tuesday, the country recorded a temperature of 29.8°C, the highest level for this time of year in 80 years. The extreme heat has placed pressure on public services and infrastructure.

A major power outage occurred in the northwestern French department of Finistere after a transformer reportedly failed due to the high temperatures. Around 68,000 households lost electricity. At one stage, more than 106,000 customers across the country were affected as the power network struggled to cope with increased demand.

The hot weather has also led to a sharp increase in the purchase of cooling equipment. Many residents have been buying fans and air conditioners to stay comfortable. However, many homes in France were not designed for such intense summer temperatures.

French officials reported that at least 48 people drowned while trying to cool off in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. In a separate tragedy, two young children died after being exposed to extreme heat inside a vehicle.

More than 90 percent of France’s population is currently experiencing extreme temperatures. Weather forecasts suggest temperatures between 39°C and 41°C across large parts of the country, including Paris and southwestern regions.

The United Kingdom is also preparing for severe weather conditions. The Met Office has issued a rare red heat-health warning for parts of England and Wales. Temperatures in London and nearby areas could reach 39°C. Officials have warned that the risks extend beyond vulnerable groups and could affect the wider population.

The Heatwave has already disrupted normal activities in the UK. Some schools have closed, rail services have been cancelled, and people have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel. Several train services between London and Paris have also been cancelled due to expected weather-related issues.

In Italy, authorities have placed 16 cities, including Rome and Milan, under red alert because of extreme temperatures. Residents have been urged to take precautions and stay hydrated.

Spain has also experienced temperatures above 40°C in recent days. Officials confirmed that two elderly people died from heatstroke during the latest period of extreme weather.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands has issued an orange warning for high temperatures, while Belgium has placed the entire country under an orange alert. Authorities fear that temperatures could reach record levels in the coming days.
