Leonardo DiCaprio is opening up about his career and personal choices as he promotes his latest film, One Battle After Another. The actor, who recently turned 50, shared that he is beginning to “slow down a bit” and wants to focus on living more authentically.
In a recent interview with Esquire, DiCaprio explained that reaching this milestone has changed his outlook. He said he no longer wants to “waste time” and will be more selective with projects. However, he clarified that he is not retiring and still feels drawn to certain roles he “can’t say no” to.
Speaking at the film’s premiere, the actor described this stage of his career as a “next chapter.” He said he plans to be more upfront in his work and professional relationships, even if that risks things falling apart. According to him, the goal now is to make choices that feel genuine and meaningful.
The actor also revealed what he considers his biggest career regret. DiCaprio admitted that turning down the lead role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 drama Boogie Nights still weighs on him. At the time, he was already committed to filming Titanic. While the blockbuster made him a global star, he said Boogie Nights was a “profound movie of my generation” and a “masterpiece.”
Reflecting on his work habits, DiCaprio shared that filmmaking often puts life on hold. He explained that taking breaks between films helps him maintain balance and perspective. “Everything stops when you’re filming,” he said, adding that overworking might have been more concerning for him than slowing down.
DiCaprio also expressed his gratitude for finally collaborating with Anderson on One Battle After Another. The project, an action-thriller released in September 2025, tells the story of a group of former revolutionaries who reunite to rescue a friend’s daughter. DiCaprio described the chance to work with Anderson as something he had been waiting nearly 20 years for.
As he enters a new stage in his career, the Academy Award winner appears ready to approach acting with greater honesty, balance, and selectivity.
