European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a powerful State of the Union speech in Strasbourg, urging member states to remain united in the face of global turmoil. She warned that Europe could thrive only through unity but risk ruin if divided.
Von der Leyen outlined several proposals aimed at strengthening the European Union’s independence. Among them were new sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers and a partial suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement, specifically targeting trade areas. The move comes amid growing public pressure over the Gaza conflict.
She also reaffirmed the EU’s strong support for Ukraine. Plans include creating a €6 billion drone alliance and using frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction. According to von der Leyen, these steps are crucial to ensure Europe’s security and credibility on the world stage.
The Commission president stressed that Europe is being tested by multiple crises—from the war in Ukraine to instability in the Middle East and increasing tension with major global powers. She declared, “My pitch today is a pitch for unity—between member states, EU institutions, and democratic forces.”
Despite her call, divisions within the EU remain over how far to go on foreign policy measures. Some member states oppose stronger action on Israel and Russia. Still, von der Leyen signaled that the Commission will act where necessary, even without full consensus.
Her message was clear: in an unstable world, only bold unity will keep Europe strong and relevant.
