A powerful earthquake struck a remote area of Tibet in southwestern China on Thursday night. The magnitude 7 earthquake killed 16 people and injured 32 others, according to reports.

The tremor hit the northern part of Tibet at around 10:33 p.m. local time. Its epicentre was in a sparsely populated area of Nagqu.

Data from the China Earthquake Networks Center showed that the earthquake originated about 10 kilometres below the ground. The shallow depth contributed to concerns about its impact on nearby communities.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that 11 injured people were in serious condition by 2:25 a.m. Friday. The remaining 21 people suffered less severe injuries.

Earthquake Damages Villages in Tibet

The earthquake affected villages near the epicentre, where authorities found injured residents. Officials also observed cracks in some buildings following the powerful shaking.

However, the full extent of the structural damage was not immediately clear. Authorities were still working to assess conditions in the affected areas.

Videos broadcast by state-run media showed residents rushing out of their homes during the earthquake. Some people took shelter outdoors, while others stayed inside parked vehicles.

A local resident described being awakened by the strong tremor. The resident said the house made creaking noises as the ground shook.

The incident caused fear among people living close to the epicentre. Rescue teams are now working to reach affected communities and assess their needs.

Remote Location Creates Rescue Challenges

The epicentre was located around 400 kilometres from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The remote location and difficult terrain could make rescue operations more challenging.

The area near the epicentre sits at a high altitude. Its average elevation is approximately 4,864 metres above sea level.

These conditions may complicate travel for emergency workers and the delivery of supplies. Reaching isolated villages can also take additional time in mountainous regions.

Local fire and rescue teams have been mobilised to respond to the disaster. State media reported that emergency personnel were travelling towards the affected area.

Rescue workers are expected to help injured residents and check damaged buildings. Their efforts will also help authorities understand the situation in communities near the epicentre.

Authorities Respond After the Earthquake

The reported deaths and injuries highlight the serious impact of the earthquake on the remote region. Authorities face the immediate task of reaching residents and providing emergency assistance.

The final extent of the damage remains unclear based on the available reports. Further assessments will be needed to establish the full impact on homes and infrastructure.

The earthquake struck late at night, when many residents were likely asleep. Reports of people rushing outside show how quickly the tremor disrupted daily life.

Emergency teams continue travelling towards the affected communities. Their response will be important in supporting injured residents and identifying areas requiring urgent assistance.
