The remote town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was shaken by a tragic mass shooting that left 10 people dead, including the suspected attacker. The violence unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, leaving the community in shock.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed six victims were found dead inside the school. Another victim later died while being airlifted to hospital, and two more were discovered in a nearby home linked to the attack. The suspected shooter was also found dead inside the school, apparently taking their own life.
Students and staff were evacuated quickly as armed officers entered the building within minutes. Two people were airlifted with serious injuries, while around 25 others received treatment at a local medical center for non-life-threatening wounds. Authorities worked urgently to reunite families with survivors.
Police said the attacker killed nine people before dying. A shelter-in-place alert warned residents to stay indoors and described the suspect as “a female in a dress with brown hair.” Officials have not yet released the attacker’s identity, the weapon used, or the ages of the victims. Investigators are also determining the connection between the school and the nearby home.
British Columbia Premier David Eby called the incident an “unimaginable tragedy” and promised full support to the devastated community of Tumbler Ridge. He praised police officers for their rapid and heroic response, noting they arrived at the school within two minutes of the first emergency call.
The provincial government described the shooting as the deadliest mass killing in British Columbia’s history. Mental health counselors have been sent to Tumbler Ridge to assist residents with trauma and grief.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed devastation over the “horrific shootings,” offering condolences to families and gratitude to first responders. Political leaders across Canada, including Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, condemned the violence and extended support to the community.
