Several Muslim-majority countries have strongly supported the United Nations agency that helps Palestinian refugees. Muslim Nations Reaffirm UNRWA’s Role Amid Gaza Crisis, stressing that the agency is vital for millions of people.
Foreign ministers from Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates issued a joint statement. They said the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) provides essential services across Gaza and the region.
The ministers highlighted that UNRWA has supported Palestinian refugees for decades. It provides food aid, healthcare, education, emergency relief, and social support. They said no other organization has the necessary infrastructure to help refugees on such a large scale.
Muslim Nations Reaffirm UNRWA’s Role Amid Gaza Crisis, noting that the UN General Assembly recently renewed the agency’s mandate for three more years. The statement said this renewal shows international confidence in UNRWA’s mission.
The ministers also condemned a recent incident in East Jerusalem, where Israeli forces stormed UNRWA’s headquarters. They called the action a violation of international law and said it disrespects United Nations premises.
They emphasized that international law requires occupying powers to allow humanitarian agencies to work freely. The ministers said this legal framework supports UNRWA’s continued operations in Gaza and other areas.
Amid the ongoing conflict and worsening humanitarian conditions, UNRWA’s aid delivery network remains critical. The agency ensures that food, water, medical supplies, and basic goods reach vulnerable populations. It also runs schools and health clinics, which are lifelines for families living amid war and displacement.
The joint statement warned that weakening UNRWA’s capacity could worsen the crisis and create social and political instability in the region. The ministers urged the international community to provide continued funding and support, allowing UNRWA to operate effectively.
Muslim Nations Reaffirm UNRWA’s Role Amid Gaza Crisis, reinforcing calls for a humanitarian response grounded in international law and protection of human rights. The statement highlights the agency’s essential role in sustaining refugees during one of the most difficult crises in Gaza’s recent history.
