South African human rights lawyer Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to international justice and peace.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the decision on Friday. It recognized her efforts to defend human rights and support victims of war and violence.

Nobel Committee Recognizes Navi Pillay’s Work

The committee praised Pillay for her commitment to international law and accountability.

It highlighted her efforts to hold governments and political leaders responsible for serious human rights violations.

The committee also recognized her work in giving victims of conflict a voice and supporting international justice.

The announcement comes as international legal institutions face increasing political pressure worldwide.

A Long Career in Human Rights

Navi Pillay has spent decades working in human rights law and international justice.

During South Africa’s apartheid era, she defended activists who challenged racial discrimination and injustice. Her legal career included work involving anti-apartheid figures, including Nelson Mandela.

She later served as a judge in major international courts and contributed to important legal proceedings.

Her work focused on accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

These efforts helped strengthen international legal mechanisms designed to protect civilians and address serious violations.

Role in United Nations Gaza Investigation

Pillay previously chaired the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The commission investigated alleged violations of international law during the conflict in Gaza. In a report released last year, the commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.

Israel strongly rejected the findings and described the report as “scandalous.”

The investigation attracted international attention and added to debates surrounding accountability and humanitarian law.

Donald Trump and Pakistan’s Nobel Nomination

The Nobel announcement also comes amid discussions about US President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts.

During her remarks, Pillay jokingly suggested she might share the prize with Trump if the audience applauded more.

Earlier on Friday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan had nominated Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

Sharif cited Trump’s reported role in helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India. The ceasefire followed a four-day military conflict between the two countries in May 2025.

Nobel Peace Prize Money and Ceremony

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize carries a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.2 million.

The official award ceremony is scheduled for December 10 in Oslo, Norway.
