New Zealand has introduced significant changes to its work visa policies for the 2025–26 period, aiming to attract skilled professionals and streamline immigration processes. Here’s what applicants need to know:
1. Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) Enhancements
Effective from November 3, 2025, approximately 90 new occupations at skill levels 1 to 3 will be recognized under the AEWV. Additionally, 30 new occupations will be added to the Specific Purpose Work Visa (SPWV) list starting September 8, 2025. These updates expand opportunities for skilled workers in various sectors.
2. Salary Threshold Adjustments
From August 18, 2025, the median wage threshold for AEWV applicants will be updated to NZD 33.56 per hour. Roles offering at least twice the median wage (NZD 67.12 per hour) will be exempt from the Labour Market Test (LMT), facilitating a smoother application process.
3. Post-Study Work Visa Opportunities
Graduates from New Zealand institutions can apply for a Post-Study Work Visa, allowing them to gain practical experience in their field. This pathway is a step towards potential residency for international students.
4. Introduction of Seasonal Worker Pathways
Two new seasonal work visa pathways will be introduced: a 3-year multi-entry visa for experienced workers and a 7-month single-entry visa for lesser-skilled workers. These initiatives aim to address labor shortages in specific industries.
5. Remote Work Visa for Digital Nomads
Starting January 27, 2025, New Zealand’s Visitor Visa allows remote workers and self-employed individuals with foreign clients to live and work in the country for up to 90 days, with the possibility of extending to nine months. This move is part of New Zealand’s strategy to boost economic growth and tourism by encouraging longer stays and higher spending.
