No Deadline Set as Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks Face Complex Road Ahead

The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that there is no fixed timeline for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the intricate nature of drafting a mutually acceptable ceasefire and peace accord. The statement comes amid renewed international pressure to end the conflict, now in its third year.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that both sides will need to exchange and revise proposals before a unified agreement can be finalized. “There are no deadlines and there cannot be any,” said Peskov, underscoring that the process would be detailed and difficult. He noted that the talks would involve parallel drafts and “complex contacts” aimed at merging them.

The remarks follow a flurry of diplomatic activity, with US President Donald Trump holding phone calls on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and European leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and the EU. Trump confirmed both Moscow and Kyiv have agreed to begin immediate ceasefire negotiations, expressing hope for a lasting peace.

President Putin reiterated Russia’s willingness to negotiate, stating Moscow is ready to work on a draft memorandum for a future peace accord. Despite this, observers remain cautious, warning that entrenched political and territorial positions may hinder rapid progress.

No formal dates for talks or draft exchanges have been confirmed. Diplomats caution that the process could stretch on for months, with critical issues such as borders and security guarantees needing detailed discussion before any lasting resolution can be reached.
