North Korea fired more than ten Ballistic Missiles into the sea on Saturday, according to South Korea’s military. The launches came while the United States and South Korea were conducting joint military drills in the region.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the Ballistic Missiles were launched from an area near the capital, Pyongyang. The missiles were fired around 1:20 pm local time. They traveled toward the sea off North Korea’s eastern coast.
Military officials said the launches were closely monitored. Authorities in South Korea are continuing to analyze details about the missiles and their flight paths.
Japan’s coast guard also detected what appeared to be a missile launch. Officials said the projectile fell into the sea. Reports indicated it landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Japanese authorities said there was no immediate threat to ships or aircraft.
North Korea has been testing different types of Ballistic Missiles and cruise missiles for many years. These tests are part of its effort to develop systems capable of delivering nuclear weapons. Experts believe North Korea already possesses nuclear weapons.
Due to these activities, the country has faced multiple sanctions from the United Nations Security Council since 2006. The sanctions target trade, weapons development, and other sectors of the North Korean economy.
Despite these restrictions, North Korea has continued to develop its missile program. The government has often defended its actions as necessary for national security.
The missile launches happened during large-scale military drills involving US and South Korean forces. The exercises are held every year to improve military readiness. Officials from both countries say the drills are defensive in nature.
During the exercises, hundreds of troops conducted river-crossing training operations. The drills included tanks, armored vehicles, and other military equipment. Commanders from the combined US and South Korean forces supervised the activities.
The United States maintains a strong military presence in South Korea. About 28,500 American troops are stationed in the country along with fighter jet squadrons.
North Korea has frequently criticized these joint exercises. The government in Pyongyang claims the drills are preparations for possible military action against it.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are also continuing. Earlier this week, South Korea’s Prime Minister Kim Min-seok met US President Donald Trump in Washington. They discussed ways to reopen dialogue with North Korea.

Officials said both sides remain interested in finding opportunities for future talks. However, the recent Ballistic Missiles launches highlight the ongoing tensions in the region.
