A deadly shooting took place near a c in Orebro on Friday, leaving one man dead and another injured. Police said the attack appeared to be connected to gang violence rather than the mosque itself.
Authorities confirmed that the second victim was rushed to hospital, but no details about his condition have been shared yet.
Police stressed there was no link between the Sweden mosque and the shooting. Instead, investigators believe the attack is tied to ongoing criminal group activity in the region.
Witnesses reported seeing at least one suspect flee the scene after the incident. However, no arrests have been made so far. The case is being treated as murder and attempted murder.
In a statement, Orebro police noted, “The shooting is believed to be linked to the criminal network environment.” They did not provide further details but assured the public that investigations are underway.
The violence near the Sweden mosque highlights a broader issue in the country. Sweden has been battling gang-related crime for over a decade, with deadly shootings among the highest in Europe. Despite this, the overall murder rate in Sweden remains similar to other European nations.
Earlier this year, Orebro was also the site of another tragic event. In February, a former student carried out Sweden’s deadliest gun attack, killing 10 students and teachers before taking his own life. That case, unlike Friday’s shooting, had no link to gangs.
Police continue to appeal for witnesses and are working to track down those responsible. The latest shooting has once again raised concerns about the rise in gang violence and its impact on public safety across the country.
