Pakistan has completed all formalities to allow dual nationality with Germany, enabling Pakistan-origin residents to keep their Pakistani citizenship while acquiring German nationality.
The Pakistan Embassy in Germany confirmed in a public notice that the necessary codal steps have been fulfilled. This officially adds Germany to the list of countries with which Pakistan has dual citizenship agreements.
Under this new arrangement, Pakistan-origin residents applying for German nationality will no longer be required to renounce their Pakistani citizenship. The embassy also stated that guidelines for restoring Pakistani citizenship for those who previously gave it up will be announced soon.
Earlier, Pakistan had introduced dual citizenship agreements with 22 countries through the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2024. The amended law allows citizens of these countries to acquire Pakistani citizenship without renouncing their original nationality.
The National Assemblyโs Standing Committee on Interior approved the bill to address challenges faced by overseas Pakistanis. Many had been forced to give up Pakistani citizenship when obtaining foreign nationality in countries without dual nationality arrangements.
The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, under the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that Pakistani citizens acquiring nationality in these 22 countriesโincluding Germanyโwill no longer need to surrender Pakistani citizenship.
Officials noted that the amendments will also allow individuals who previously renounced Pakistani citizenship after acquiring foreign nationality to restore it. The law resolves long-standing legal and bureaucratic complications faced by overseas Pakistanis.
Previously, dual nationality agreements were limited to a few countries, which created obstacles for Pakistanis seeking citizenship abroad. The Ministry of Law explained that many countries require proof of renunciation before granting citizenship. The amendments remove these hurdles, simplifying the process for Pakistan-origin residents seeking German nationality and other eligible countries.
This change is expected to benefit thousands of Pakistanis living in Germany, providing them the legal flexibility to retain ties with their homeland while enjoying the rights of German citizens.
