Pakistan Railways suspends services and advances digital upgrade

Pakistan Railways has temporarily suspended train operations between Quetta and Peshawar due to the ongoing flood situation.

Officials confirmed that the Jaffar Express will not operate on August 25 and 26 as a precautionary measure. However, the Chaman Passenger Train departed from Quetta according to schedule, ensuring partial continuity of services.

In addition to emergency adjustments, Pakistan Railways has launched a major modernization programme to digitize and automate its operations. The initiative aims to enhance passenger safety, reduce delays, and improve efficiency in both passenger and freight transport.

According to official records, advanced communication and signaling systems are being deployed at key sections of the national network. A computerized interlocking system is being installed at Landhi, Jummagoth, Badal Nala, and Sarhad stations. This system will replace outdated manual controls, helping improve routing efficiency and prevent accidents.

Furthermore, the telecom system on the Karachi–Lahore section is being upgraded with a modern digital microwave radio communication system. This upgrade is expected to provide secure and uninterrupted data transmission, which is critical for smooth train operations.

Pakistan Railways is also rolling out a Push-to-Talk digital communication network in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sukkur, and Karachi divisions. This system will enable real-time coordination between control rooms and field staff, further strengthening operational safety.

The modernization drive comes as part of broader efforts to revive the railway sector, which has long struggled with outdated infrastructure and service delays. Officials believe that automation and digitization will not only improve passenger experience but also boost freight movement across the country.

By combining emergency measures with long-term upgrades, Pakistan Railways is working to ensure safer, faster, and more reliable services for the future.
