A Palestinian grandfather, Khaled Nabhan, who gained global recognition last year for mourning his 3-year-old granddaughter killed in an Israeli airstrike, was tragically killed on Monday in another Israeli attack on central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp.
Nabhan’s heartbreaking story touched hearts worldwide when images emerged of him embracing his granddaughter Reem’s lifeless body, calling her the “soul of my soul” as he kissed her and grieved her loss. The incident became a symbol of the immense human suffering in Gaza during Israel’s ongoing military campaign.

After the deaths of his grandchildren, Nabhan dedicated himself to humanitarian work, providing relief and food to struggling Palestinians amidst the blockade and famine. Known as Abu Diaa, he was also seen feeding stray cats in Gaza, reflecting his compassion despite personal tragedy.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed over 45,000 people, mostly women and children, since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes, while Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
