According to an exit poll conducted by the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM), Putin garnered a staggering 87.8% of the vote, positioning him for another six-year term. This potential extension could surpass the tenure of Josef Stalin, making Putin Russia’s longest-serving leader in over two centuries.

However, the election has drawn criticism from Western countries such as the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, citing concerns over the imprisonment of political opponents and limitations on freedom of speech. Despite international scrutiny and opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s death sparking protests, Putin dismissed any notion of electoral interference and maintained that the process was democratic.

Inspired by Navalny, the opposition staged demonstrations both within Russia and abroad. Nevertheless, Putin’s victory remained unchallenged, reflecting his firm grip on the country’s political landscape.

The election witnessed a turnout of 74.22%, surpassing previous levels and indicating increased participation, notably among younger demographics. Yet, amid domestic challenges, tensions persist in the Ukraine conflict.

Putin has framed the conflict as a defense against Western expansionism, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy denounced the election as illegitimate, deepening the geopolitical divide.

As Russia’s election unfolds amidst geopolitical tensions and internal unrest, its ramifications extend beyond national borders, influencing Eastern European politics and shaping global relations.
