Why Is Russia Applauding The Pakistan-Afghanistan Ceasefire?

Russia has welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement reached between Pakistan and Afghanistan, praising both nations for choosing dialogue and diplomacy after deadly border clashes. The truce, brokered by Qatar and Türkiye during talks in Doha, is seen as a key step toward peace and regional stability.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow strongly supports the ceasefire agreement. She described it as a “mutual agreement along the Afghan-Pakistani border” achieved through Qatari and Turkish mediation.

“We welcome the agreement on a mutual ceasefire along the Afghan-Pakistani border, achieved between Kabul and Islamabad with the mediation of the Qatari and Turkish authorities,” Zakharova stated.

She noted that the choice to engage in dialogue rather than confrontation provides a foundation for lasting peace. According to her, this ceasefire agreement is vital for maintaining friendly relations and regional security. Zakharova also urged both Islamabad and Kabul to enhance cooperation, especially in counterterrorism, to ensure long-term peace and stability.

The ceasefire agreement came after weeks of escalating tension and deadly exchanges along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Both countries had accused each other of cross-border violations before agreeing to halt hostilities.

Meanwhile, China has also welcomed the truce. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun reaffirmed Beijing’s support for continued dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said China “welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached between Pakistan and Afghanistan” and supports all diplomatic efforts that promote peace and stability in the region.

Guo added that regional peace is a shared responsibility and that China encourages both nations to use dialogue to resolve their disputes.

The recent ceasefire agreement reflects a collective effort by regional powers to promote stability, reduce tensions, and foster cooperation between neighboring states.
