Rutte Backs Trump’s Iran Strike As NATO Sets Huge New Spending Goal

New NATO chief Mark Rutte has thrown his full support behind former US President Donald Trump’s recent strike on Iran, calling it a “crucial” move as the alliance agreed to raise defence spending to an unprecedented 5% of GDP.

Speaking ahead of a key NATO summit in The Hague, Rutte praised Trump’s bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, rejecting concerns about its limited impact. “It’s important to do everything to stop Iran’s nuclear capabilities,” he said, reinforcing NATO’s tough stance.

Despite US media questioning the effectiveness of the strike, Rutte defended the action, describing it as necessary amid threats from Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. He also highlighted the urgent need for NATO allies to boost defence budgets due to rising global tensions.

All NATO members backed the 5% spending goal, although Spain signaled it might not comply fully. The pledge includes 3.5% on core defence and 1.5% on broader security. Rutte admitted the increase would be tough for some countries but said there was “no alternative.”
